Sports is given a prominent place in this Institution
as it is an important part of just about every society in one way
or another where everyone is involved in sports. Hence students
are encouraged to take part in sports in order to train and groom
them to take victory and defeat in the same spirit.
ATHLETICS

Wijekoon
The annual inter-house Sports Meet 2008 was held at
the College grounds on 21st February 2008. Rt. Rev. Dr. J. Winston
S. Fernando, Bishop of Badulla graced the occasion as the Chief
Guest Hulugalla House emerged champions.
Students who excelled at the above meet represented
the College at the Circuit, Zonal, Provincial and Inter Schools
Athletic Meets organized by the Department of Education, Bandarawela
A.G.A’s Athletic Meet organized by the Ministry of Sports
and the All Island Inter School Athletic Meet.
CHESS CLUB
Teacher-in-charge: Mr. W.M.I.A. Chandrasekera
The Chess Team participated in the All Island and
All Island Super Six Chess Tournaments and did remarkably well.
Our Chess Team emerged Zonal Champions in the 2008 team games.
L.H.A.S. Aravinda was named the School Chess player
of the year.
TABLE TENNIS
Teacher-in-charge: Mr. Anton Joseph
The Table Tennis Club have the great opportunity and
fun in warming up ourselves and having great enjoyment in the evenings
especially when it comes to practise sessions.
There are more than 10 students who turn up for regular
practises, after school, which goes on till about 5.00 pm.
Having the equipment to play tournaments we have had
3 play sessions last year and we hope to have the practises and
play sessions in the days to come.
I am thankful to the Headmaster who gives us guidance
and to the Prefect of Games for his support and to the players for
their cooperation.
MINI TENNIS

Cooray
Mini Tennis was introduced to S. Thomas’ College,
Bandarawela with the sole aim of getting students involved in the
game of tennis. Although some of the rules are different from the
traditional game, the skills and movements remain quite the same.
Practices are held every Thursdays and sometimes coaching sessions
are done by the Bandarawela tennis club as well.
During the last year some of our students took part
in the inter-school tournament in the Uva Province and this paved
the way for the students to further develop the game.
BADMINTON

During the year in review this institution participated
in a few badminton tournaments organized by the Sri Lanka Schools’
Badminton Association. As usual The S.L.A. Ratnayake Memorial All
Island Under 16 Badminton Team Championships was conducted very
successfully and Mr. Upali Gunaratne the Chairman of the National
Savings Bank and
Mrs. Gunaratne graced the occasion as the Chief Guests. Further
this institution participated in the Provincial tournament and emerged
champions.
FOOTBALL
Teacher-in-charge: (Under 17 and 19) – Mr. T.D.
Darling
The College Under 17 and 19 Football Teams participated
in the Inter Schools, Circuit, Zonal and Provincial Tournaments
organized by the Education Department. The Under 17 Team emerged
Champion and the Under 19 Team were the Runners up at the Circuit
Tournament.
RUGBY
FOOTBALL

The Under 12, 14, 16, 18 and 20 Rugby Football teams
of the College participated in the Uva Province Inter School Rugby
Football Tournament organized by the Uva Province Schools Rugby
Football Association and the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association.
The College senior Rugby Football team participated in the Inter
Club Rugby Football Tournament organized by the Uva Province Rugby
Football Union in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Rugby Football
Union.
CRICKET

Coach: Mr. M.A.A. Wijenayake
The Under 19 team participated in the Sri Lanka Schools
under 19 cricket tournaments.
The under 17 cricket team participated in five matches
in the All Island Inter School Cricket Tournament and won three
matches and lost two.

15)
Coach: Mr. M.A.A. Wijenayake
The under 15 cricket team took part in the Sti Lanka
Schools cricket tournament and played 10 matches. The team won 5
matchs, lost 4 and 1 match ended up without a dicision.
Teacher-in-charge: Mr. A. Wijenayake (Under 13)
The under 13 cricket team participated in eleven
matches in the All Island Inter School Cricket Tournament and won
six matches and lost three and two matches ended up without a decision.
