Sports at S. Thomas' College Bandarawela

Sports is given a prominent place in this Institution
as it is an important part of just about every society in one way
or another where everyone is involved in sports. Hence students
are encouraged to take part in sports in order to train and groom
them to take victory and defeat in the same spirit.
ATHLETICS
Prefect of Games: Mr. T.D. Darling
The annual inter-house Sports Meet 2009 was held at
the College grounds on 20th February 2009. Brigadier Bandu Munasinghe
and Mrs. Irangani Munasinghe graced the occasion as the Chief Guests.
Keble House emerged champions.
Students who excelled at the above meet represented
the College at the Circuit, Zonal, Provincial and Inter Schools
Athletic Meets organized by the Department of Education, Bandarawela
A.G.A Divisions Athletic Meet organized by the Ministry of Sports
and the All Island Inter School Athletic Meet.
CHESS CLUB
Teacher-in-charge: Mr. W.M.I.A. Chandrasekera
The Chess Team participated in the All Island and
All Island Super Six Chess Tournaments. The Team was 2nd runners-up
in the 2009 Zonal tournament.
The All Island Super Six Chess Tournament was sponsored
by S. Thomas’ College, Bandarawela and the Sri Lanka Telecom
donated 100 chess boards.
TABLE TENNIS
Teacher-in-charge: Mr. Anton Joseph
This activity brings fun at the same time there is
something to learn. Yes! Table Tennis at S. Thomas’ College,
Bandarawela takes a new path with the participation of more freshers
joining the play. During the evenings we have the session and it
extends till the games period is over. I must state that under the
guidance of the Master in charge students take part actively in
the practice sessions. We also took part in the annual indoor games
tournament during the past year.
MINI TENNIS

Tennis is one of the sports that this College participates
in, and although the College lacks a tennis court; that hasn’t
in anyway affected the students taking part in this sport as they
go to the Bandarawela Tennis Club for regular practices.
As a result Mini Tennis too was introduced to the
College sometime back in view to develop the skills and get children
interested in the game at an early age. Mini Tennis is usually for
students ranging from the age group between 5 -10 and practices
are held every Fridays with about 40 student actively taking part
in it.
BADMINTON

Coach: Mr. G.B.A. Silva
During the year in review this institution participated
in a few badminton tournaments organized by the Sri Lanka Schools’
Badminton Association. As usual The S.L.A. Ratnayake Memorial All
Island Under 16 Badminton Team Championships was conducted very
successfully and Air Commodore M.L.K. Perera, Commanding officer,
Sri Lanka Air Force, Diyatalawa graced the occasion as the Chief
Guest. Further this institution participated in the Provincial tournament
and emerged champions.
FOOTBALL
Teacher-in-charge: (Under 17 and 19) – Mr. T.D.
Darling
The College Under 17 and Under 19 Football Teams participated
in the Inter Schools, Circuit, Zonal and Provincial Tournaments
organized by the Education Department. The Under 17 Team emerged
Champions and the Under 19 Team was the runners-up at the Circuit
Tournament.
The Under 19 team participated in the Inter School
All Island League Tournament and were champions in the 1st round.
RUGBY FOOTBALL
Teacher-in charge: Mr. T.D. Darling
The Under 12, 14, 16, 18 and 20 age group Rugby Football
teams of the College participated in the Uva Province Inter School
Rugby Football Tournament organized by the Uva Province Schools
Rugby Football Association and the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football
Association. The College senior Rugby Football team participated
in the Inter Club Rugby Football Tournament organized by the Uva
Province Rugby Football Union in collaboration with the Sri Lanka
Rugby Football Union.
The Under 16 seven a side team were runners-up at
the Rugby Football Tournament organized by the U.P.S.R.F.A. and
the Under 18 team were Cup Champions.
The Under 16 Division II Under 18 Division II and
Under 20 Division I played up to the plate semi finals and up to
the plate quarter finals respectively at the tournament organized
by the S.L.S.R.F.A.
The Under 20 team emerged champions at the 1st round
in the S.L.S.L.T. and played up to quarter finals in the 2nd round.
CRICKET
Teacher-in-charge: Mr. W.M.I.A. Chandrasekera (Under
15)
Coach: Mr. M.A.A. Wijenayake
The Under 15 cricket team took part in the Sri Lanka
Schools cricket tournament and played three matches. The team won
two matches and lost one match.
Teacher-in-charge: Mr. M.A.A. Wijenayake (Under 13)
The under 13 cricket team participated in eighteen
matches and won thirteen and three matches ended without a decision
and lost two matches in the All Island Inter School Cricket Tournament.
