Clubs and Societies
THE STUDENT CHRISTIAN MOVEMENT

From its beginning the Student Christian Movement
of S. Thomas’ College, Bandarawela has been one of the most
active clubs of the College and one of its regular features has
been the organizing of the Carol Service to mark the birth of our
Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Last year too this service was held
to a large gathering at the Keble Memorial Hall with both the senior
and junior choirs taking part.
During the last year the Student Christian Movement
together with the Advanced Level students collected essential items
such as clothes, shoes, stationery etc to distribute to a less privileged
school at Nayabadda.
The five clubs - Library, Gardening, Bible School,
Youth and Welfare act in their respective category to provide a
better service to the students and thereby making the Student Christian
Movement more effective as well.
Regular chapel service is conducted by our Chaplain
and Archdeacon of Nuwara Eliya, Ven. Dhiloraj Canagasabey, Rev.
Asiri Perera from the Methodist Church and Rev. Paul Priyajayanth
from the Church of the Ascension, Bandarawela together with the
staff and students. Collection from the service is usually donated
to an orphanage or to a home for the elder’s.
Finally the Student Christian Movement would like
to thank the Chaplain, Rev. Asiri Perera, Rev. Paul Priyajayanth,
Staff and each and everyone who assisted in their various activities
over the last year.
ENGLISH BIBLE READING CLUB

Yet another year dawned for the above club to have
its activities in its own style.
Yes! As usual we held the Bible Reading Competitions
last year too. The 2009 competitions were really remarkable. Why
do I say thus? Because they (the participants around 175 Christians
and Catholics) showed great enthusiasm towards the competitions.
The judges were happy with the performances of the students.
Our thanks go out to all the Christian and non-Christian
teachers for their co-operation. Above all we thank the Almighty
God for His grace.
BUDDHIST STUDENTS MOVEMENT
Teacher-in-charge: Mr. A.J.M.U.S. Bandara
Buddhist Students commence their day with religious
preaching. This year students too participated in the preaching
which has helped in improving their oratory skills.
· A meditation programme was organized.
· The inter-class ‘Vesak’ Lantern
competition were held at the college grounds.
· The Annual 'Bakthi Gee' recital and the presentation
of the eighth edition of the 'Methmal' magazine was published and
presented to the public.
· A felicitation ceremony for the Teachers
was conducted very successfully.
· A ceremony to invoke blessing for students
who were sitting for the G.C.E. (O/L) students was organized.
HINDU STUDENTS MOVEMENT

The year under review was an active one for the society
The “Vani Vizha” celebrations was successfully held
for the 22nd year with many competitions namely the inter-class
oratory, kolam, knowledge in religion and thevaram. Deputy Minister
of Health Hon. Dr. Vadivel Suresh and Mrs. Suresh graced the occasion
as the Chief Guests.
Students participated in an examination conducted
by the Vivekananda Mission of Colombo. Students participated in
a competition organized by the Hindu Youth Movement for the “Navaraththiri”
at the Hindu Cultural Hall, Bandarawela.
I extend my sincere gratitude to each and everyone
who extended their support to make the activities of the Hindu Students
Movement a success.
THE ISLAMIC SOCIETY
Teacher-in-charge: Mrs. G.M. Raheem
The Islamic Society of S. Thomas’ College, Bandarawela
takes pride in mainly organizing programmes to strengthen the unity
and promote religious activities.
During the past year one of the main programmes the
society organized was the Meelad-Un-Nabi celebrations to mark the
birth of the Holy Prophet Mohamed. This programme was held with
a large gathering at the Keble Memorial Hall while Dr. and Mrs.
Rizvi Sheriff were the Chief Guests on this occasion.
Although considered as a religious organization, the
students do also help in the activities of other clubs and societies
as their help to develop a bond among the various communities. Some
of the students belonging to the Islamic Society also managed to
take part in competitions held at Zonal and All Island Levels and
received prizes.
The Islamic Society would like to thank each and everyone
who helped in making their activities a success.
SENIOR SINHALA LITERARY ASSOCIATION

Weerasinghe
The Senior Sinhala Literary Association is formed
with students from Grade 10 onwards with the intention of developing
their oratory and dramatic talents and skills by taking part in
programmes and competitions such as Essay Writing, Short Story Writing
and Poetry.
JUNIOR SINHALA LITERARY ASSOCIATION

We are happy to state that we had our annual general meeting at
the beginning of this year. Since then we have had several sittings
of the association. Throughout the sessions we have staged dramas,
videos of different arts and cultural competitions are held. We
had a workshop on “Literary Meeting” with some resource
persons. We are thankful to all teachers for the support and co-operation
given. We hope to continue with the same in the future too with
many more additions to the present criteria.
SENIOR TAMIL LITERARY ASSOCIATION

The Tamil Literary Association of S. Thomas’
College, Bandarawela aims in bringing out the language efficiency
of the students through many ways.
The students’ talents are exposed through various
competitions and cultural events, where as to this S. Thomas’
College, Bandarawela proudly presents the “Kalai Vizha”
annually. 2009 ‘Kalai Vizha’ was organized by the association
with the support of the staff and Professor A. Sanmugadas of the
University of Jaffna, Consultant, Department of languages, South
Eastern University graced the occasion as Chief Guest.
SENIOR ENGLISH LITERARY ASSOCIATION

The Senior English Literary Association of S. Thomas’
College, Bandarawela, purely aims to function with greater ease
and self confidence in practical pursuits, and help the students
to express themselves more completely as individuals seeking a deeper
personal fulfilment. Inter class dramas and competitions were organized
during the year in review.
JUNIOR ENGLISH LITERARY ASSOCIATION

Here we are proud to state that around five hundred
students from the Middle School i.e. Grade 6 to 9 deserve the privilege
of experiencing ‘English’ through the Junior English
Literary Association.
After holding the Annual General Meeting of the Junior
English Literary Association we have had monthly sessions during
which students come out with their talents, showing their colours.
This creates a rare opportunity for the Middle School,
students to be exposed more to ‘English’.
The past president (Yasiru Makavita) presented a Notice
Board to the Junior English Literary Association on which we exhibit
the articles of students which improves the habit of reading.
JUNIOR SCIENCE SOCIETY

The Junior Science Society has been involved in activities
such as do you know contests, debates and educational excursions
to improve the knowledge in science.
The Junior Science Society has been able to fulfil
its objectives to improve the knowledge of Science in the fast growing
world.
INTERACT CLUB
Teacher-in-charge: Mr. K.K. Bandara
The interact club of S. Thomas’ College, has
been functioning for more than fifteen years. The club has been
functioning as a community service organization affiliated to Rotary
Club of Bandarawela. Under the direction of the Headmaster of the
College the club has been participating in community service activities
organized by the Rotary Club of Bandarawela. The club consists of
an Exco of nine and fifty members. Annually the committee has been
participating in district assemblies, seminars and leadership training
programmes.
LEO CLUB
Teacher-in-charge: Mr. S. Dason
The Leo Club was established in order to provide opportunities
for the students of this College to develop their talents and leadership
qualities and also help the less fortunate by various projects.
During the past year it received the runners-up award
for the outstation clubs in appreciation for the outstanding contribution
and dedication rendered to the Leo District 306 C2 and also received
the 2nd runners-up award for the most outstanding Leo Club Staff
Advisor.
At present there are about 100 Leos in the College
and are always on the look-out to bring in more members in an effort
to help the younger generation to bring out the best in them. Finally
the Leo Club wishes to thank the Staff, Parents and other clubs
and societies for their encouragement and support they received
during the past year.
ENVIRONMENT CIRCLE

W.M.G.V. Hasanthi
The environment circle gathers every Friday after
school for weekly meetings and discusses project proposals. A walk
was organized to celebrate the world environment day with the participation
of many schools in the province. A herbal plantation project has
been initiated and plants have been planted to beautify the school.
A dengue prevention campaign was held successfully.
The Environment Circle of the Uva Province had their
Prize Giving at the College which included a series of seminars
on environment conservation.
